STANARDSVILLE, Va. (February 26, 2016) – Residents of Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County and The Harbor at Renaissance are preparing more than 3,000 “Hope Boxes” for disadvantaged children, and the public is invited to drop off school supplies, small toys, toiletries and canned foods through March 15.

The assistance effort is part of the Stanardsville senior living community’s new partnership with Hope for Appalachia, a network of churches, businesses and individuals that assists children in poverty-stricken areas of eastern Kentucky. Employees, residents and families of Renaissance Assisted Living and The Harbor at Renaissance, part of Grace Retirement Village, are pitching in to provide much needed school supplies, food, socks and hygiene products.

Liesa Dodson, Marketing Director of Renaissance Assisted Living and The Harbor of Renaissance, leads Hope for Appalachia’s Virginia team and was instrumental in organizing a team of residents to pack the Hope Boxes to deliver to some of the poorest counties in America.

Residents of Renaissance Assisted Living and the Harbor at Renaissance are currently helping collect items for Hope for Appalachia. “I have purchased boxes and our residents will be filling the boxes as an activity. They are very excited about helping make a difference in children’s lives through these hope boxes,” Dodson said. “We have invited the families of our residents as well as the public to participate by dropping off items in a basket that we have placed in our front lobby.”

The dropoff location is at 422 William Mills Drive in Stanardsville.

Dodson and her husband, Mike, are going on their fifth trip with Hope for Appalachia, March 21 to 25. This year they expect to fill 3,280 boxes filled with hope and love and will deliver them to seven schools in Harlan and Perry counties, Kentucky. Dodson said she is involved with Hope for Appalachia, “because I am called to love and give these children hope for a better tomorrow.”

“Grace Retirement Village sits at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where these poverty-stricken areas exist in Kentucky. These children could just as easily be ours. Several of the counties in eastern Kentucky are the poorest in the country. Principals and teachers have shared that these children have a hopeless environment and families are struggling to find and provide basic necessities,” Dodson said. “We want to give these children hope by visiting with them and providing school supplies, toothbrushes and toothpaste, small toys and food. No child in our country should go to bed hungry or without hope.”

Bryan Cook, Senior Vice President of Legacy Senior Living, the management company for Renaissance Assisted Living and The Harbor at Renaissance, said, “At Legacy Senior Living, we are thrilled to see our teams and residents pull together for such a tremendous project. We love Appalachia and are excited to help support these boxes of love.”
